Hi Reader
Dad Joke: Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? Great food, no atmosphere!
I was at the World Federation of Chiropractic conference in Utrecht recently listening to a speaker discuss how we learn. Something he said really resonated with me. The information we learned at university isn’t necessarily wrong. But with the speed at which knowledge evolves, some of what we were taught may already be outdated.
So if the last time you really studied something was at university, there’s a good chance your knowledge hasn’t kept pace with the profession. He then went on to talk about where learning actually happens. Although we tend to think of learning as something that takes place in a classroom…knowing something and being able to use it are two very different things. The classroom gives you knowledge and the clinic gives you application.
It’s only when you take a concept and apply it to the child standing in front of you that the real learning begins.
Why didn’t that technique work as expected? Why did this child respond differently from the last one? Why does the theory suggest one thing, but the clinical presentation suggest another? You’re testing your understanding in real time.
And now comes the next step…You need people who will challenge your thinking.
The speaker suggested that the process doesn’t end with clinical application. He spoke about needing to bring those experiences back to a peer group. A place where you can discuss what happened, explain your reasoning, question your decisions and listen to other perspectives.
Someone might point out something you missed, challenge an assumption, offer an alternative explanation or share an experience that changes the way you approach the next child. That’s how we sharpen our clinical reasoning and that’s how knowledge develops into clinical wisdom!
As I listened, I realised that this is exactly what we’ve been building with Connected Paediatrics. It’s not just another place to watch lectures. Not a library of information that you collect and never use.
It’s a community that supports your learning process. First, we give you the knowledge - through masterclasses, seminars, clinical discussions and current research, we explore the science behind what we do and challenge some of the assumptions we may have carried since university. Then, we give you the tools. Through our Technique Bank, assessment frameworks and practical demonstrations, we translate that knowledge into something you can actually use in practice. Then you take it into your clinic.
You assess. You adjust. You observe. You retrain. You retest. You discover what works and what doesn’t and perhaps most importantly - what you still don’t understand.
And then you bring it back to our WhatsApp community and wider Connected Paediatrics peer group. You share your experiences, ask questions and challenge ideas. You hear how other clinicians are approaching similar situations and you return to practice with a slightly different perspective - a little sharper than before.
If you’re looking for more than just another collection of online lectures, we’d love you to be part of the Connected Paediatrics community. Bring your curiosity, your clinical challenges, your successes and your questions.
The best learning happens when we connect.
