Dad Joke: Why did the scarecrow win an award at university? Because he was out-standing in his field.

Today was a big day for our family. We’ve just arrived home from dropping my daughter off at University for the first time, still can’t quite believe we’re here already.

The build-up has been intense. It’s been a good few weeks of thinking back, dusting off the memories and wanting each moment to last just that little bit longer.

As part of the last week, I have been checking and adjusting Megan daily. Is it because she has been in pain? No. Was she lacking function? Also no. (was it because my wife made sure I was doing it. Yes!!!)

What had been happening is a lot of change and a lot of big emotions. Checking and adjusting her was to create buffer. I wanted good, clean afferentation to hit her brain like a rudder to hold her steady in the middle of the chaos. I worked to keep the vagus free and her system was working to support her.

I also didn’t just adjust her once and leave it. The stress was ongoing and we know from the data that to change the pattern the brain needs a constant inflow of trustable signal.

All of this is true…But there’s more to the story…

On the last night before we drove down she came downstairs and asked if I wouldn’t mind taking another quick look at her. And this is where the magic of what we do actually lives. You can chuck all the science, all the electrical probes that prove X and Y. You can throw out the textbooks and the models because there is something else that they can’t explain that goes on when you care for someone in the way we do. There’s a transfer, a piece of you that you offer them.

And so, we sat quietly, me checking and making corrections while her breathing slowed and her heartrate calmed. It is a beautiful thing to be able to interact with another human on this level.

I’ve never been prouder than when we all hugged goodbye today and she stood tall, calmed and organized. Such resilience and such poise.

As for the rest of us…I’m not so sure.

It’s the reason the first thing I do when we go back to South Africa is get adjusted by my father. It’s why I love adjusting my family and it’s why we all do what we do. Yes, the science says we make all of these changes and that’s great.

But there’s a little something extra in there too.

A little bit of fairy dust.

A little magic
