Connected Paediatrics Weekly: The Inner Circle

Hi Reader

Dad Joke: What do you call a sheep who can sing and dance? Lady Ba Ba

Song of the Week: Post Malone - Circles

There are some names you see booked in your diary and just think “That’s going to be fun”. One of those for me is a marketing guru, he is always equipped with an interesting take, opinion I hadn’t considered or a little golden nugget…this appointment was nugget time.

We were talking about a flight I had taken recently with an airline I don’t usually use and how, even though we were running quite late on the tarmac, the flight deck kept us up to date every few minutes telling us what our progress was, handing out extra water bottles and even expressing that they understood how cramped things are in economy (that was me) and that they were working hard to get us going.

My patient replied “Good on them, they were keeping you inside the circle”

As per usual I initially didn’t have a clue what he was on about…but by now he knows that he has to explain himself…so he did, and it went something like this.

You don’t have to be a marketing genius to keep people involved and invested in your business…you just have to remember one thing “keep them inside the circle”. You do that by making them part of something.

People on the inside of the circle are listened to, treated kindly and with respect. You invest in people inside the circle by finding out how they are, genuinely being interested in their progress, letting them understand the inner workings of what you are doing and why you are doing it.

In simple terms…your family are inside the circle…the bus driver isn’t. Treat your patients like your family and your circle will grow…treat them like the bus driver and...

Show them they are part of the tribe. Things like pre-care emails explaining how to get to the practice and where to park. A thorough history and examination that shows your investment and aftercare emails with information pertinent to their case. Once you start thinking in this way things become easy…how do I show investment…how do I treat them well.

Because the secret is…

Once they are inside the circle…that’s when they are happy to invest in you.

This little switch in my thinking “how can I bring this patient / parent inside the circle” has changed my approach to table talk. I’m no longer fighting between giving too little information and hosing them down with facts…now it’s about “what can I say and do to get them inside the circle”. All of a sudden you see them as a person instead of a patient! It’s amazing what changes when you look from this perspective. (this goes for other care providers as well!)

The magic isn’t in dazzling patients with facts, it’s in keeping them inside the circle. Inside the circle they feel heard, safe, and part of something. Outside the circle, they feel like a bus driver passing through.

P.S. You’re reading this…you’re in my circle.
