Connected Paediatrics Weekly: I've been waiting all weekend to tell you this

Hi Reader

Dad Joke: I was going to try an all almond diet, but that's just nuts.

Song of the Week: 100 years by Five for Fighting

I’m currently grabbing an iced latte at the airport waiting for my flight home from the Netherlands where I’ve been presenting Peds In Motion: Neurodevelopment in children. Great bunch of Chiro’s, fantastic weekend but what I want to tell you about happened before the seminar, the night I arrived in the Netherlands.

Let’s rewind…

I had had an email the week before from Dr Jan Hoeve, a Chiropractor in the Netherlands, who has pioneered work in the field of vestibular regulation and fussiness in infants. I have read his papers, been at seminars with his associates and even interviewed him once online, years again, during the Covid “bad times”. He was inviting me to stop by the practice on my way up north so we could discuss fussy babies (if you know me at all…you know that would be an invitation I would not be turning down).

In a nutshell, his hypothesis is that irritability in infants comes from the cerebellum not modulating the vestibular system correctly due to tight suboccipital musculature. His approach is unique…but this is to be expected when you understand a bit more about who he is.

Dr Hoeve came into Chiropractic late, after having had a career in Uranium Geology to treating his first baby in 1993. At age 73 he decided to build and open his new clinic…that was 10 years ago…

We arrived, were ushered into his beautiful office and all at once it was apparent that we were in the presence of someone with a passion for paediatric practice that I have not seen often. From his detailed intake forms to his meticulous record keeping and stats on his practice. Everything was geared towards constant improvement driven by this underlying bubbling excitement for his work.

We eventually moved from the practice to a nearby restaurant where the conversation kept flowing. Talk about dropping gems and pearls!! I would have paid a lot of money for a photographic memory that night because I am sure I missed way more than I picked up.

Our journey up north was still going to take a while so we reluctantly said our goodbyes and as I walked away I had to remind myself…this man is 83 and he is still coming up with theories, still seeing heaps of kids but mostly…he is still excited about it.

I want that.

“If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life”. This is a phrase my father often uses and its 100% true. It doesn’t mean you won’t work, on the contrary, if you love what you do you will put hours and hours into it…but they will never feel like work…and that’s the trick I think.

Dr Hoeve is something special. It’s a trip I wont soon forget. Thanks Doc!

Hi Reader Dad Joke: What did one plate whisper to the other plate? Dinner is on me. Song of the Week: Stephen Wilson Jr. - Year to Be Young 1994 For about 2 years my son James spent his Friday evenings at swimming training…and so did I. It was an hour a week where we both spent time submerged. Him underwater, and I under about a ton of the latest research into plagiocephaly and torticollis in infants.
