Connected Paediatrics Weekly: I heard something wild this week

Hi Reader

Dad Joke: Why don’t chiros make good secret agents? Because they always crack under pressure. 🕵️‍♂️💥

Song of the Week: George Ezra - Shotgun

I heard something wild this week.

It was a demo of an AI answering service for a chiropractic practice…and it was good. Like scary good. As with most of these advancements, once you knew it was AI you could start picking out the inconsistencies. The voice was monotone, the answers were generic…but hey it did the job and if I didn’t know any better, I would have been 100% fooled into thinking I was booking my appointment with an employee of that clinic.

This is the future, like it or not…its coming

BUT…

My feeling is that the more we interact with the cold computation of AI in our lives, the more the personal human connection becomes desired. Especially when you are in a situation of pain, illness or disease…that’s when you want the comfort of your fellow human…you want someone you can trust.

A large part of my day in paediatric practice is bonding with new parents. Listening intently, sharing a smile and finding ways to make a heavy situation lighter. Yes, the adjusting is important and yes, the homework and care plan are integral to the success of the care…but you want to know what sits on top of that pile?…Trust.

According to the psychologists, trust is built off the back of the parent or patient’s beliefs about your motivation and intention rather than concrete outcomes of treatment. That stunned me when I first read it. It almost didn’t make sense…and then I thought about it more. Who do you turn to when the chips are down…someone who you know has your best interests at heart. The more trust there is, the more parents are willing to follow your advice and the more solid the outcomes become.

Being able to deliver content (what is happening) and context (the fact you care about the outcomes) is the magic sauce that lets parents know that you know what you’re doing, and you care about what happens.

It all comes down to this…

A new mom came into the practice a few months ago and the first words out of her mouth were “I don’t know why I am here, I’m not sure what you would be able to do about reflux”. It was an odd introduction. But it was followed by “but my friend came here with her baby, and she said I should come because she trusts you”.

That one sentence was worth more than all the research, all the facts and figures you could care to list. The fact is that someone she trusts, trusts me and that is good enough for her, even when she doesn’t understand how I could possibly help.

“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care” – President Theodore Roosevelt.

Hi Reader Dad Joke: I used to have a job at a calendar factory, but I got fired because I took a couple of days off. Song of the Week: Hey Soul Sister, Train So, if your initial paediatric training was anything like mine, the management section of nocturnal enuresis (NE) probably looked a lot like this… "Something’s not right, don’t drink just before bed, adjust what you find and get the parents to pop down to the local arts and crafts shop for a little paintbrush and have at that ol’ Galant...

Hi Reader Dad Joke: Why was the baby strawberry crying? Because it's parents were in a jam. Song of the Week: Hello - Walk off the Earth (ft KRNFX) I had the fantastic opportunity to teach in Dublin this weekend (and before you ask…yes it’s true...the Guinness just tastes better in Ireland…and I split the G on first try…if you know you know). I met up with some good old saffa mates and made some new friends to add to the Paediatric Chiropractic tribe. Something different about this weekend...

Hi Reader Dad Joke: Why do babies scream so much? Their womb service got cut off! Song of the Week: Ellie Goulding - Still falling for you They say you only really learn something when you teach it. I can vouch for the fact that, at least in my case, this is 100% true. Teaching something makes you examine the subject from every angle. Every time I teach something I come away with a new perspective. Especially when there a question that makes me take a step back and re-examine what I thought I...
